We got vaccinated! This is what we did next…

Getting The Grandparents Vaccinated

My grandparents have been traveling with us since before the pandemic even started. So, when “protect our at risk population” started it was a no brainer that I would refuse to let them leave. I made it my mission to get their groceries, get their prescriptions, and make sure that they were first in line to be vaccinated.

It took dedication, scouring for appointments and memorizing their insurance information. It required a lot of stress, making appointments three hours from us. Only to be turned away because “oops, we forgot to mention this is only a Pfizer clinic.” But we did it, we survived. They were fully vaccinated, in Arizona, well before many of their friends and family, in Michigan, even got the first doses. Hearing about all of the second dose shortages made it feel like even more of a win when they got theirs. I literally cried when they texted me that it was done.

Getting Ourselves Vaccinated

Then, our doctor in California mentioned that appointments would soon be opening up for our group. Truly, I was stunned. I hadn’t even considered that WE might be able to get the shots… especially after how difficult it was getting them for my grandparents. Immediately I felt a renewed sense of anxiety and determination — we HAD to have these shots ASAP, and honestly… we did. I searched and searched, and then made appointments at Walgreens. I went in that day fully expecting to be rejected but we weren’t. They gave us the shots and, just like that, life was going back to how it used to be. I was going to be able to hug my brother again! Forced socially distant visits would be a thing of the past. Goodbye summer 2020, Hello summer 2021!

But, for us, things didn’t really go back to how they were before, at least not immediately. The boys weren’t and still are not vaccinated, because they can’t be. Then there’s all of other people that are just choosing not to be. We still haven’t been to a restaurant, there are people that we haven’t spent time with, and I am still extremely hesitant to expose the boys to the unvaccinated. But, as more people were getting vaccinated we decided that it was the right choice to go back to Michigan.

Going Home

On April 23rd we drove back into Michigan with our quaranTEAM in tow. We got home just in time to celebrate Ryan’s birthday with a small fully vaccinated party. It was the perfect way to get back into the swing of social gatherings. I made a kinda sorta sugar free carrot cake which was DELICIOUS, we had taco platters, and tequila shots. After which, Aaron and I rushed home by 11 because we’re parents now, lol.

Since getting back to Michigan, Henry and Theo have also been spending a lot of time with their grandparents. Unfortunately, not all of the kids grandparents are able to travel with us. So, they have definitely been making up for lost time cuddles and cookies.

I’ve been spending most of my time with all of the friends we weren’t able to see during Covid. I’ve been hosting girls night to watch The Hills. We actually went to the mall again, which was so weird! And I got to meet up with my friend Megan so our kids could play together. It’s been a really nice “vacation” here in Michigan. A visit that wouldn’t have been possible without the vaccine.

So, thank you science. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. ✌️Amanda
